Fall Feeding Frenzy: Bass and Walleye Patterns

The water cools, the bait moves, and the bass go on a feeding frenzy to fatten up for winter. It is the most repeated sentence in fall fishing, and the fishing really is good. But the explanation is doing something the data does not support, and the gap between them is why so many good anglers fish November like it is October.

Fall is the best stretch of the year on most water. Bass and walleye both get more catchable, more predictable, and more willing to chase something moving. None of that is in dispute.

What is worth questioning is the mechanism everyone attaches to it. If you believe fish are eating more as the water cools, you will keep fishing fast when you should have slowed down, keep chasing the backs of creeks after the bait has already pulled out, and treat a slow December afternoon as a failure rather than as exactly what the season predicts.

So here is the fall story with the mechanism corrected, for both species, and where to go next on each.

Fall is a temperature, not a month

The single most useful habit in autumn is carrying a thermometer and using it in more than one place. A large reservoir is not one water body thermally - a shallow tributary arm, the main basin, and the dam end can differ by several degrees and sit in genuinely different phases of the season on the same afternoon.

Everything below is keyed to water temperature rather than to a date, because a lake at 68 degrees in Alabama and a lake at 68 degrees in Minnesota are fishing far more alike than two lakes on the same calendar week.

What turnover actually does - and what it does not

Fresh water is densest at about 4 degrees Celsius, roughly 39 Fahrenheit, rather than at freezing. Through summer that fact stacks a lake into layers: a warm, light, oxygenated upper layer, a cold and dense lower one, and a thermocline between them that blocks mixing. Over months, decomposition on the bottom burns through the oxygen trapped below, and nothing replaces it.

In autumn the surface cools, gets denser, and sinks. Eventually the density difference is small enough for wind to mix the whole column top to bottom. That is turnover. It re-oxygenates the depths, and on the way up it drags oxygen-poor water and suspended organic material through the lake - which is why a turning lake looks murky, sometimes smells faintly of sulfur, and fishes badly for a stretch.

Now the part usually left out. Turnover is not one event that happens to every water on a schedule:

  • Shallow water may never stratify at all. A creek arm or flat under roughly six feet generally mixes all summer on wind alone. No layers means no turnover to recover from - which makes these the places to be while the main lake is unsettled.
  • Severity scales with how bad the bottom layer got. A deep, clear, low-nutrient lake mixes cleanly. A shallow, fertile reservoir with a summer-long anoxic bottom is the one that turns the color of coffee.
  • It is not instantaneous. Virginia's Department of Wildlife Resources puts the disruption at roughly one to two weeks, and recommends fishing the shallow creeks that are unaffected while it passes.
  • Arms turn on their own schedule. Days or weeks apart within one reservoir.

The practical read: do not write off a lake because somebody said it was turning over. Look at the water in front of you.

The frenzy is real. The reason usually given for it is not.

Here is the part that gets skipped. A fish's capacity to eat and grow does not increase as water cools. It peaks well above where autumn ends up, and falls off from there.

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission's temperature compilation (Wismer and Christie, Great Lakes Fish. Comm. Spec. Pub. 87-3, 1987) lists optimum growth temperature for subadult largemouth bass at 26 to 28 degrees Celsius, about 77 to 82 Fahrenheit, with the lower bound for growth near 10 Celsius, about 50 Fahrenheit. For walleye, the same compilation records a final thermal preferendum of 20.6 to 23.2 Celsius - roughly 69 to 74 Fahrenheit - and a growth optimum near 22 Celsius, about 72 Fahrenheit, the latter drawn from Hokanson's percid review in the Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada (34:1524-1550, 1977).

Read those against a fall thermometer. A lake at 78 degrees in September is at or near a bass's optimum. At 68 in October it is below it. At 52 in late November a bass is near the temperature where growth stops entirely. Daily consumption is declining across the whole back half of autumn. Bioenergetics modeling makes the same point from the other direction - Rice, Breck, Bartell and Kitchell built their largemouth growth model (Environmental Biology of Fishes 9:263-275, 1983) with temperature as a ceiling on consumption, not a throttle you open by cooling the water.

So why does the fishing get better? Because catching fish and fish eating are different problems. Four things change, and none of them require a fish to eat more than it did in July:

  • The forage became worth chasing. Young-of-year baitfish have grown into what Virginia DWR describes as three- to four-inch protein-packed morsels. The value of a single prey item went up.
  • The cover disappeared. Vegetation that hid forage all summer dies back, making prey dramatically more available. This is the quiet half of the story - prey got easier to catch, not just predators hungrier.
  • The whole water column opened. After destratification there is no deep cool refuge that beats the shallows, so fish will use two feet of water at midday in a way they would not in July.
  • Fish roam instead of holding. A fish following a mobile school of bait is a fish that will move to intercept a moving lure. That is the biggest single change from summer.

The honest version: fish get easier to catch while getting less hungry in absolute terms. Both are true at once, and holding both is what keeps you effective in late November when the frenzy story has stopped explaining anything.

Bass: find the food first, the structure second

That inversion is the thing to take into a fall day. In July you find good structure and work it. In October you find bait and fish whatever structure happens to be near it. Good structure with no forage on it is not a fall spot.

The season runs in three phases, and they ask for different things:

  • The 70s. The most underrated stretch, because it is the only part of fall where the water is actually at a bass's optimum rather than below it. Fish are staging on transition structure - main-lake and secondary points, creek mouths, channel swings - not yet committed to the backs. Cover water fast.
  • The 60s. The migration is on and fish follow it shallow and back. Creek ends with any inflow, flats with one irregularity on them, and above all the windy bank. This is the numbers window.
  • The 50s and below. The bait pulls back out and the fish follow it to main-lake structure and steeper banks. Slow down substantially. This is also the trophy window - a fish eating fewer, larger meals is exactly the fish that commits to one big slow target.

One trap worth naming: surface-busting schooling bass are exciting and usually small. If you want size, work something heavier underneath the school - a jig, a spoon, a swimbait below the commotion - where the larger fish sit picking off what falls.

Walleye: follow the light, the wind, and the breaks

Walleye run a cooler and narrower thermal window than the species they share water with, and that changes the shape of their autumn. Where a bass spends fall moving away from its optimum, a walleye lake cooling through the low 70s and into the 60s is passing directly through the range walleye prefer. Early fall is a genuine improvement in conditions for them, not just a change.

Three things drive location once the lake settles after turnover:

  • Light. The reflective layer behind a walleye's retina buys it an advantage that is largest in low light, and autumn simply contains more low light per day. As water drops below roughly 60 degrees, afternoons frequently outproduce mornings - a real reversal from summer habit. Water also clears as algal production falls, which pushes fish deeper at midday and makes the dawn and dusk windows matter more.
  • Wind. A wind-blown shoreline of rock or sand breaks up light penetration, stirs food into the column, and pins baitfish against a hard edge. If you take one variable into a fall walleye day, take this one.
  • Bottom transitions. Sharp breaks where hard bottom falls into a soft basin are the classic fall structure. In late fall the fish concentrate hard onto a small number of these, which is why the season produces long blank stretches punctuated by remarkable spots.

The tackle-box consequence is that baits go up in size, and again the reason is not greed. The prey physically grew. Large chubs on a rig, longer crankbait bodies, bulkier plastics. On lakes holding ciscoes or tullibee, the late-fall spawn concentrates the largest predators onto shallow rock - one of the few genuinely predictable big-fish windows of the year, though that one rests on guiding practice rather than controlled study.

Where the two-species analogy breaks down

It is tempting to treat these as one pattern. They are not, and the differences are where most cross-species mistakes come from:

  • Temperature. Fall moves bass away from their optimum from the very start. It moves walleye toward theirs before eventually passing it. Early fall is better for walleye than the equivalent week is for bass.
  • Light. Clearing autumn water is broadly a positive for walleye, who own the low-light edge. For bass it mostly means finesse and longer casts.
  • Direction of travel. Bass follow bait shallow and into the backs before reversing. Walleye reorganize onto breaks and hard bottom, and their late-fall move is a concentration onto deep structure more than a shallow migration - with the notable exception of shallow rock after dark.
  • Big-fish timing. Both have a late window. For walleye there is a wrinkle worth knowing: through spring the largest fish tend to lead seasonal movements, and in fall the pattern commonly runs the other way, with the biggest fish trailing. Staying with an area after the numbers bite fades is sometimes how the fish of the year gets caught.

A checklist for the next eight weeks

  • Take water temperature, in more than one place. That number defines which phase you are actually fishing.
  • Find the bait before the structure. If you have not marked forage in fifteen minutes, leave.
  • Match speed to temperature, not to enthusiasm. Fast in the 70s and 60s, deliberately slow in the 50s and below.
  • Test the turnover claim against the water in front of you before accepting it as an explanation.
  • Fish the wind. For both species, on most days.
  • Upsize to the actual forage class, having checked what it is rather than assuming.
  • Do not expect one spot to produce for eight weeks. A fall spot has a window, not a season.
