Fall Bass: Turnover and the Bait Migration

Fall bass fishing is better than summer, but not for the reason it is usually given. What turnover actually does to a lake, why cooling water means a bass eats less per day rather than more, and how to fish the three distinct phases of autumn.

Introduction

Fall is the season anglers talk about in superlatives. The water cools, the bait moves, and somewhere in the retelling it becomes a feeding frenzy - bass gorging themselves around the clock to pack on weight before winter.

The fishing really is good. The explanation usually attached to it is not quite right, and the difference matters, because the wrong mental model sends you to the wrong water at the wrong temperature with the wrong retrieve speed.

This guide covers what actually changes in a lake between September and freeze-up. What turnover does and how much of its reputation it deserves. The Frenzy Framing Is Half Wrong

Start with the part that is true: bass are cold-blooded, their metabolic rate tracks water temperature, and in autumn they are laying down energy reserves ahead of a lean winter. All of that is real.

Here is the part that gets skipped. A largemouth's capacity to eat and grow does not increase as the water cools - it peaks at a temperature well above where fall ends up, and declines from there. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission's temperature compilation (Wismer and Christie, Great Lakes Fish. Comm. Spec. Pub. 87-3, 1987) lists optimum growth temperature for subadult largemouth at 26-28°C and juveniles at 25°C - roughly 77-82°F. The same compilation puts the lower bound for growth near 10°C, about 50°F.

Read those numbers against a fall thermometer. A lake sitting at 78°F in early September is at the optimum. At 68°F in October it is below it. At 52°F in late November a bass is close to the temperature where growth stops altogether. Consumption per day is falling through the entire back half of autumn.

Bioenergetics work makes the same point from the modeling side. Rice, Breck, Bartell and Kitchell (Environmental Biology of Fishes 9:263-275, 1983) built a largemouth bass growth model around exactly this set of constraints - body size, temperature, activity, and consumption - and temperature is a ceiling on the other terms, not a throttle you open by cooling the water.

So why is the fishing better? Because catching fish is not the same problem as fish eating. Four things change in fall, and none of them require bass to eat more than they did in July:

  • The forage becomes available. Young-of-year baitfish have grown into a size class worth chasing, and the cover that hid them all summer is dying back.
  • The whole water column opens up. Once a lake destratifies, bass are no longer pinned above a thermocline or driven deep by midday heat. They can use shallow water at noon.
  • Bass roam instead of holding. Fish chasing mobile schools of bait are fish that will move to intercept a moving lure. That is the single biggest change from summer.
  • Fewer boats. Not biology, but it is real.

The honest version of the fall story is that bass get easier to catch while getting less hungry in absolute terms. Those are compatible, and holding both makes you better at the late-season end of it, where anglers who expect a frenzy tend to fish far too fast.

What Turnover Actually Does

Turnover gets blamed for every bad autumn day on the water. Some of that blame is earned. Much of it is not, and the difference comes down to whether your lake stratifies at all.

The mechanism. Fresh water is densest at about 4°C (39°F), not at freezing. Through summer a lake settles into layers - a warm, light, well-oxygenated epilimnion on top, a cold, dense hypolimnion below, and a thermocline between them that resists mixing. Over months, decomposition on the bottom consumes the oxygen trapped down there, and because the thermocline blocks exchange, nothing replaces it. In deep or nutrient-rich lakes the lower layer can go fully anoxic by late summer.

In autumn the surface cools, gets denser, and sinks. The density difference holding the layers apart shrinks until wind can mix the whole column top to bottom. That is turnover. It re-oxygenates the depths, and on its way it lifts oxygen-poor water and suspended organic material up through the lake - which is why a turning lake often looks murky, smells faintly of sulfur, and fishes badly for a stretch.

Now the part that is usually left out. Turnover is not a lake-wide event that happens to every water on the same schedule:

  • Shallow water may never stratify. A creek arm or flat under roughly six feet generally mixes all summer on wind alone. It has no layers to overturn, so it has no turnover to recover from. During the worst of it on the main lake, these are often the best places to be.
  • Severity scales with how bad the hypolimnion got. A deep, clear, low-nutrient lake mixes relatively cleanly. A shallow, fertile reservoir with a summer-long anoxic bottom is the one that turns the color of coffee and shuts off.
  • It is not instantaneous. Virginia's Department of Wildlife Resources describes the disruption as roughly a one-to-two week window, and recommends fishing the shallow creeks that are unaffected while it passes.
  • Arms turn over on their own schedule. A big reservoir is not one water body thermally. Tributary arms, the main basin, and the dam end can be days or weeks apart.

The practical read: do not write off a lake because someone said it was turning. Check the water in front of you. Clear water and normal-looking suspended material means you are fine. Chocolate water full of drifting particulate, dying algae, and a sulfur smell means move shallow or move to a different arm - not go home.

The Bait Migration, and What Is Actually Driving It

The shorthand is that shad move to the backs of creeks in fall and bass follow. Directionally that is right on many reservoirs. The mechanism underneath it is worth understanding, because it tells you what to look for when your lake does not have shad at all.

The forage grew up. Baitfish spawned in spring spend the summer as a size class too small to be worth a chase. By autumn, the survivors are substantially larger. Virginia DWR describes young-of-year fish having grown into three- to four-inch "protein-packed morsels" by fall - the point where the calories returned justify the energy spent catching them. That shift in the value of a single prey item is the real trigger, and it applies to bluegill, perch, and shiners just as much as to shad.

The cover disappeared. Aquatic vegetation that sheltered forage all summer thins and dies back as light and temperature drop. The same agency notes that this die-off reduces the places forage can hide, making them more available to bass. This is the quiet half of the fall story: predators do not only get hungrier in the folk version, prey gets easier to catch in the real one. If your water has no shad migration, this still happens.

The bait schools tighten. Scattered summer baitfish consolidate into dense, mobile schools. That concentrates the fish that eat them. It also makes fall genuinely feast-or-famine: a hundred yards of bank with no bait on it can be dead water on a day when the next pocket over is chaos.

What to look for, in rough order of reliability:

  • Bait visible on electronics - clouds and balls suspended over structure or stacked in a creek channel. If you are not marking bait, keep moving.
  • Birds working. Diving gulls and terns are a genuine long-range indicator. Herons and egrets stacked on a bank mean bait is shallow there.
  • Surface activity - flickering, dimpling, nervous water, or the occasional obvious blowup.
  • Deteriorating vegetation. Green, still-standing grass adjacent to open water holds fish; brown, collapsing grass consumes oxygen as it decays and generally does not. See Reading Summer Vegetation for how to read the difference in hand.

The rule that survives across lake types: in fall, find the food first and the structure second. That is a genuine inversion of how you fish the same lake in July.

  • If you have not marked bait in fifteen minutes, leave - fall rewards moving more than grinding
  • Match the profile of the actual forage class, which by autumn is larger than it was in June

Early Fall: The 70s

The first phase begins when surface temperatures fall out of the summer peak and settle into the upper and mid 70s. This is the most underrated stretch of the season, because it is the one period in fall when the water is actually at a largemouth's thermal optimum rather than below it.

Bass at this point have not committed to the backs of creeks. They are staging on the structure that connects deep summer haunts to shallow fall feeding areas - the transitional water that fish must cross rather than the destination they eventually reach.

  • Main-lake and secondary points - the classic interception feature. Bait moving toward a creek has to round them.
  • Creek mouths and the first channel swing inside - a funnel with deep water adjacent.
  • Channel swings and ledges that touch a flat, giving fish depth and shallow feeding within one short move.
  • Standing green vegetation on the outside edge of a flat.

Presentations. This is the fastest phase of the season and the one where aggressive, water-covering baits earn their keep. Walking topwaters and buzzbaits early and late; squarebill crankbaits banged through shallow cover; spinnerbaits and swim jigs where the grass is still standing; deeper-running cranks and football jigs on points and ledges. Retrieve speed can be high - metabolically these fish are as capable as they will be all season.

The mistake to avoid is committing to the very backs of pockets too early. In the 70s the bait is usually still staging out on the main lake or in the lower thirds of creeks. Fish the funnel before you fish the destination.

Pro Tips

  • Cover water fast - this is the phase where a milk run of points genuinely outperforms picking apart cover
  • Wind on a point is worth more in fall than almost any other structural detail
  • Do not run to the backs of creeks before the bait has actually moved there

Peak Fall: The 60s

When surface temperature settles into the 60s, the bait migration is generally underway in earnest and the fish follow it shallow and back. This is the window most people mean when they say fall feeding frenzy, and it is the best of the season for numbers - not because each bass is eating more than it did in August, but because bass are shallow, roaming, grouped, and willing to chase.

Destratification matters here in a way anglers rarely name: once the column has mixed, there is no longer a deep, cool, oxygenated refuge that is more comfortable than the shallows. Bass can use two feet of water at midday in a way they could not in July. The whole lake becomes available, and so the shallow third of it - where they can corner bait against something - is where they go.

  • The backs of creeks and pockets, particularly ones with any inflow. Moving water stays cooler, holds more oxygen, and concentrates bait.
  • Large flats with a feature on them - a stump row, a rock vein, a grass edge, a ditch running through. Featureless flats are hard to fish; flats with one irregularity are not.
  • Wind-blown banks. Wind pushes plankton, plankton pulls baitfish, baitfish pull bass. On a day with one windy bank and nine calm ones, fish the windy one.
  • The last piece of green grass in an otherwise dying bed.

Presentations. Lipless crankbaits ripped across flats, squarebills deflecting off cover, spinnerbaits and swim jigs matched to the bait profile, and walking topwater over schooling activity. When fish are actively pushing bait to the surface, a lure that stays in the strike zone through the whole retrieve beats one that falls out of it - cast past the activity and bring the bait through it rather than dropping on top of the boil.

Schooling fish are a trap worth naming. Surface-busting bass are exciting and usually small. If you are after size rather than a photo of a hard day, the better play is often to work something heavier underneath the school - a jig, a spoon, or a swimbait fished below the commotion - where the larger fish tend to sit picking off what falls.

  • Fish the windiest bank you can find before fishing anything else
  • Cast past schooling activity and retrieve through it rather than casting into the middle
  • Work a heavier bait underneath a surfacing school for the larger fish

Late Fall: The 50s and Below

The last phase is the one where the frenzy framing does the most damage. Water in the 50s and dropping is below the range where a largemouth grows well, and the compilation figure for the lower growth bound - around 50°F - is now in sight. Virginia DWR marks roughly 55°F as the point where active, fast-moving baits stop being the automatic answer, and describes fish slowing significantly below 40°F.

Bass respond to this by reversing the migration. The bait pulls back out of the shallow creek ends, and the fish follow it toward main-lake structure, channel edges, steeper banks, and the first real depth adjacent to the flats they spent October on. They also group up more tightly - which is why late fall produces both blank stretches and occasional extraordinary spots.

This is also the trophy window. The same agency notes you can catch your biggest bass of the year in late fall, particularly as water falls into the low 50s and upper 40s. That is not a contradiction of the bioenergetics. A fish eating fewer, larger meals is exactly the fish that will commit to one big, slow, high-value target - and larger bass carry the reserves to be selective in a way a small fish cannot.

  • Steep banks, bluff ends, and channel-adjacent structure where a fish can change depth without travelling far.
  • The deep edge of the flats that produced in October - often the same spots, fished twenty yards further out and ten feet deeper.
  • Isolated hard cover - brush, a stump, rock - in the first meaningful depth.
  • The warmest water you can find on a sunny afternoon, especially north-facing banks that take sun all day.

Presentations. Slow down substantially. Suspending jerkbaits with long pauses, hair jigs and football jigs crawled, blade baits hopped on the bottom, and finesse presentations on the deep edge. Big slow swimbaits belong here too - the profile that makes no sense in a numbers phase is precisely right in a phase where a bass wants one meal rather than ten.

  • Fish the warmest part of the day rather than dawn - the afternoon bite strengthens as water cools
  • Lengthen your pauses well past what feels reasonable; the strike often comes during the dead stop
  • The best late-fall spots are frequently the October flats fished deeper, not entirely new water

  • Cold-water bass fight less and recover more slowly - minimize air exposure and release promptly
  • Cold-water immersion is a genuine hazard this time of year; wear a PFD and dress for the water temperature, not the air

A Checklist, Held Loosely

Fall rewards a moving angler with a thermometer more than almost any other season. Before you commit a day to a pattern:

  • Take a water temperature, and take it in more than one place. The season you are actually fishing is defined by that number, and a big lake can hold three of them at once.
  • Find the bait before you find the structure. This is the inversion that defines autumn. Good structure with no forage on it is not a fall spot.
  • Match your speed to the temperature, not to your enthusiasm. Fast in the 70s, fast in the 60s, deliberately slow in the 50s and below.
  • Test the turnover claim before believing it. Look at the water, smell it, and check a shallow arm that never stratified.
  • Do not expect the same water to produce for eight weeks. The migration moves back before it moves out; a spot has a window, not a season.
  • Ask what is actually driving a pattern that works. Wind, bait, depth, and cover are tangled together in fall, and isolating which one mattered is the difference between something you can repeat next weekend and one good afternoon.

And hold the frenzy story loosely. Fall fishing is excellent, and the reason is not that bass have become gluttons. It is that a mixed water column, a shrinking supply of cover, and a grown-up class of forage have briefly made them findable. That is a better thing to know, because it keeps working in late November when the frenzy story has stopped explaining anything.
