Spring Pike Fishing
Spring is prime time for pike fishing. As ice melts and water warms, pike move shallow to spawn and feed aggressively.
Pre-Spawn (40-50°F):
- Pike stage near spawning marshes and backwaters
- Males arrive before larger females
- Fish are feeding heavily after winter
- Target creek mouths, shallow bays, and marsh edges
Post-Spawn (50-60°F):
- Pike remain shallow recovering and feeding
- Emerging weed growth provides ambush cover
- Some of the year's best fishing for numbers and size
- Spinnerbaits and spoons over shallow flats produce
Pro Tips
- Spring pike are often in less than 5 feet of water
- Focus on the warmest water in the lake
- Slow presentations work better in cold water
Summer Pike Fishing
As water warms above 65°F, pike behavior changes significantly:
- Early Summer: Pike relate to developing weed beds on flats and along drop-offs
- Mid-Summer: Fish seek cooler water near thermoclines, often in 15-30+ feet
- Locations: Deep weed edges, underwater points, suspended over basins
- Timing: Early morning and evening produce best; midday fishing is tough
Summer Tactics:
- Troll deep-diving crankbaits along weed edges
- Vertical jig with large soft plastics over deep structure
- Fish topwater at dawn for explosive strikes
- Seek current areas where water is oxygenated
Important
- Summer pike are stressed by warm water - handle quickly and carefully
- Consider not targeting pike when surface temps exceed 75°F
- Release large fish in the water without removal when possible
Fall Pike Fishing
Fall is arguably the best season for trophy pike. Cooling water triggers aggressive feeding behavior as pike prepare for winter.
Early Fall (60-55°F):
- Pike push shallow following baitfish
- Weed beds are still green and holding fish
- Similar patterns to late spring
Late Fall (55-40°F):
- Vegetation dies off, pike move to rock structure
- Fish feed aggressively, less selective than summer
- Trophy-sized fish are most accessible
- Large lures produce large fish
Prime Tactics:
- Big swimbaits and jerkbaits for trophy fish
- Large spoons and spinnerbaits covering water
- Sucker under a bobber in known holding areas
Pro Tips
- Fall pike are less boat-shy - don't overlook water near your launch
- Big baits catch big fish - don't be afraid to upsize
- Overcast days often produce all-day action
Winter Pike (Open Water)
In areas with open water through winter, pike can still be targeted:
- Fish are sluggish but will feed opportunistically
- Focus on the warmest parts of the day
- Slow presentations are essential - dead bait on the bottom or slow-trolled
- Pike congregate in predictable areas near deep structure
Many pike anglers transition to ice fishing where winter open-water pike fishing is limited. See our ice fishing pike guide for hard water tactics.
