Ice Fishing for Perch

Yellow perch are one of the best eating fish in freshwater and can provide fast action when you locate an active school. They're more aggressive than bluegill and respond well to active jigging presentations.

Perch travel in schools that can range from small groups to hundreds of fish. Key to success:

• When you catch one, stay on that spot - more are usually nearby
• Use electronics to track schools moving through the area
• Be ready to move if the school passes
• Perch often follow specific routes between areas

Perch respond to more aggressive presentations than bluegill:

• Use slightly larger jigs (1/16-1/8 oz)
• Bright colors like chartreuse, orange, and pink produce
• Tip with minnow heads, perch eyes, or waxworms
• Pound the bottom to stir up sediment and attract fish
