Spring Crappie
Pre-Spawn (Water Temp: 50-60°F):
- Crappie stage in deeper water near spawning areas
- Often found suspended 8-15 feet deep
- Schools begin moving shallow on warm days
- Excellent fishing - fish are concentrated and feeding
Spawn (60-70°F):
- Crappie move to shallow cover (2-8 feet)
- Stake beds, brush piles, and flooded vegetation
- Males fan nests and guard eggs
- Most accessible fishing of the year
Post-Spawn:
- Fish gradually move back to deeper water
- Recovery period - feeding is reduced temporarily
- Fish nearby deeper structure

- Spring spawn is the best time for bank anglers to catch crappie
- Bedding crappie are often visible in clear, shallow water
- Males in dark spawning colors are protecting nests
Summer Crappie
Summer crappie are often the most challenging to find:
- Location: Crappie suspend in deep water, often over basin areas
- Depth: Can be 15-30+ feet down, even in deeper water
- Behavior: Schools follow shad and other baitfish
- Feeding: Dawn and dusk are primary feeding times
Summer Tactics:
- Use electronics to locate suspended schools
- Spider rigging covers water efficiently
- Night fishing under lights is extremely effective
- Deep brush piles and stake beds hold fish

Fall Crappie
Early Fall:
- Crappie begin moving shallower as water cools

- Feeding increases as fish prepare for winter
Peak Fall:
- Excellent fishing as crappie school and feed heavily
- Brush piles, docks, and timber produce
- Fish may be at various depths - cover the water column
Late Fall:
- Crappie concentrate in deeper areas
- Predictable locations make targeting easier
- Slower presentations as water cools

- Once located, fall schools tend to stay put
- Larger crappie often caught in fall
Winter Crappie (Open Water)
Winter crappie are predictable but require patience:
- Location: Deep brush piles, channel edges, basin areas
- Depth: Often 20-40 feet
- Behavior: Sluggish but will feed
- Timing: Midday often better than dawn/dusk
Winter Tactics:
- Vertical jigging with very slow presentations
- Small jigs tipped with minnows
- Fish directly on electronics marks
Pro Tips
- Winter crappie concentrate - find them once, catch them all day
- Smaller jigs and lighter line often necessary
- Warm, stable weather periods produce better than cold fronts
