Spring Bluegill

Pre-Spawn (Water Temp: 55-65°F):

  • Bluegill begin moving toward shallow spawning areas
  • Found around emerging vegetation and wood cover
  • Actively feeding after winter
  • Respond well to jigs and live bait

Spawn (65-80°F):

  • Males create circular beds in 2-6 feet of water
  • Beds often grouped in colonies
  • Males aggressively guard nests
  • Most accessible fishing of the year

Pro Tips

  • Spawning beds are often visible as light circles on the bottom
  • Males in spawning colors (orange breast, blue face) are protecting nests
  • Catch and release during spawn helps maintain big bluegill populations

Summer Bluegill

Summer bluegill behavior varies with lake conditions:

  • Early Summer: Post-spawn fish disperse to nearby cover
  • Peak Summer: Larger fish move to deeper structure (8-15')
  • Location: Weed edges, brush piles, deeper docks
  • Timing: Best fishing at dawn, dusk, and into night

Summer Tactics:

  • Fish deeper during hot periods
  • Topwater poppers at dawn and dusk
  • Small jigs on deep weed edges
  • Night fishing under lights can be excellent

Pro Tips

  • Summer bluegill often feed on the surface at dawn - look for risers
  • Crickets and grasshoppers are outstanding summer baits
  • Deeper fish are often larger than shallow fish

Fall Bluegill

Early Fall:

  • Bluegill feed actively as water cools
  • Move shallower following food sources
  • Excellent fishing as fish prepare for winter

Late Fall:

  • Fish concentrate in deeper areas
  • Schooling behavior intensifies
  • Slower presentations as metabolism decreases
  • Focus on warmest parts of the day

Pro Tips

  • Fall bluegill are often the fattest of the year
  • Insect hatches can create excellent surface feeding
  • As water cools, slow down your presentation

Winter Bluegill (Open Water)

Where open water exists, winter bluegill fishing is possible:

  • Location: Deep water near vegetation or structure
  • Behavior: Sluggish but will feed
  • Tactics: Very slow presentations on or near bottom
  • Timing: Midday when water warms slightly

Pro Tips

  • Winter bluegill require extremely slow presentations
  • Fish during the warmest part of the day
  • Tiny jigs tipped with waxworms work well
